This one goes out for those who haven’t heard of Holostars or only know about them through osmosis and don’t know where to start or who to stan. Though to be honest I have only been a fan for less than a year, I hope to compile a helpful guide to help the uninitiated to get into Holostars.
I’ll also have a lil glossary for terms and slang that English speakers are prolly unfamiliar with in the JPN Vtuber-sphere. Though some of these terms/slangs have spilt into the English-speaking scene, it can be helpful for those who are beginners in Japanese to understand some JPN internet slang.

Wholesome / Pure ・Derived from idol-culture, usually in reference to say the vtuber is ‘family-friendly’, pure and has no dirty thoughts/use foul language. Though in most contexts it’s used as a joke to describe the opposite (E.G. A vtuber proclaiming they are seiso but in actuality are not)

Pro-tip for English-speaking viewers:
Most of the time vtubers don’t mind the broken Japanese in chat.
Using Deep-L is probably ok, though it’s ok to type English in chat as long as you keep to the chat rules some Vtubers have (be respectful etc).
Some Vtubers can read English, but keep in mind the limitations/nuances in English slang
Also, while using Deep-L or other machine translators, keep in mind that when you type in “you” in English it will usually spit out 「あなた」= anata, while grammatically correct, usually not quite normal to call another person/stranger/acquaintance “anata”. So if the machine translator spits out anata, prolly replace it with the Vtuber’s name [then again probably not recommended for those who do not understand Japanese, in case you accidentally replace something else].
E.G. -> ENG: I am your fan ->JPN (Machine Translation): 私はあなたのファンです (watashi wa anata no fan desu) ->JPN (Corrected): 私は（X）さんのファンです (watashi wa X-san no fan desu)

Holostars is an all-male “idol” Vtuber group, produced under Hololive Productions. Even though they’re called “idols”, they mostly stream games and chat with their audience as well as covering songs/singing. There is also a running joke within the Hololive community that Hololive and Holostars are not idols, just comedians.
Holostars started off with humble beginnings with the debut of Miyabi Hanasaki back in 2019, though it had a rough start where there was very little interest/viewership at the time of Holostars’ birth.
However over the years they slowly gained interest and a dedicated fanbase with 2021 being their biggest growth with 3D models, more events and an end-of-year live concert. While there had been 3 original members graduating during the past 2 years, by the end of 2021 they were a group of 9 close knit members.
As of 2022, four new members have joined Holostars, debuting as “UPROAR!!”, a separate unit under the Holostars umbrella.
From here on out, Holostars continues to grow with more collabs and events planned.

Shinove Daidou was the main manager for Holostars, he used to post daily schedules on his twitter. He also has a Live2D model which he uses on rare occasions.
He became the Holostars main manager after taking over Yagoo’s (CEO) temporary management role. After 4 years working with Cover Corp and almost 3.5 years working as Holostars manager, he decided to resign and move on to helping other smaller start-up companies/projects. He made this decision after recognizing that Holostars can now stand on their own feet and are in a right position to continue on without him.

A weekly 1~2 minute short 3D anime full of gags, skits and abstract humour. Releases every Friday in the evening (Japan Time).
English subtitles are available during each episode premier.
There are many other videos post on the official youtube channel such as 3D collabs such as 3D karaoke, 3D kabaddi, etc. where the boys are up to no good, just guys being dudes messing around. They usually use these 3D collabs as ways to sneak in big announcements for future events etc.
Phew, sorry that this is such a huge post. I just wanted to make sure I included everything I could to get more people in Holostars (yes this post is to indoctrinate new people lol).
I hope this post is helpful for those who are interested in Holostars but don’t know where to start.
Honestly I wanted to write up this post for a while now. This is just my way to show my appreciation and support towards Holostars. I’m sure I’m not the first to say that they helped me laugh again during a dark time.
I can’t draw or create any visual content, but I can write, so this is the least I can do.
My only wish is for more people to appreciate Holostars and their hard work because they’ve been through a lot. Though idk if a lot of people will see my post lmao
Also I hope the glossary I put together will help others understand a few Japanese slang/phrases, especially those learning Japanese. Though keep in mind most of the live streams are entirely in Japanese, however there are a few saviours out there in chat that may be live-translating. The official channel, however, makes sure to subtitle/translate their pre-recorded videos.
Big shout out to the clippers/translators out there. Thanks to them I was introduced to Holostars. Huge shout-out to Sktch who has been making monthly compilations of holostars clips that go for around 40 minutes and have English translations. Please check them out 👇
I also hope there’s a take-away from this post that Holostars can be enjoyed by a wide range of demographics. There is a small percentage of guy fans, which I hope continues to grow once the stigma of Holostars being only for girls/women is broken down.

Besides super chats, you can support the boys through joining their membership, which is a monthly subscription that will give you access to members only streams, community posts, members only monthly illustrations and emotes + membership badges.
To become a member, hit the “join” button which will direct you to the membership page that will list out the exclusive bonuses for being a member. The subscription price is always listed in your currency. The most common membership base price is 500 yen, though other channels may have higher base prices.
Membership badges will change their design depending on how many months you have been a member. Also, if you feel that you cannot pay for the membership for a couple of months, it’s okay to cancel. When you decide to join membership again your membership badge status will be the same as the one that you had before cancellation (E.g. if you cancelled when you were at 6 months membership status, once restarting membership again you will still have that 6 month membership badge).
There is also “upgrade” tiers that allows you to have access to even more exclusive content, though the price will be higher because that content requires more money in order to balance out the costs.
If you prefer having physical goods instead of virtual badges and emotes, supporting the boys through buying their merch is also ideal (and probably lasts longer).

Hololive Production Official Store – It is for domestic sales (Japan residents only), but recently they have opened up their international shipping options! They now ship to (mainly DHL shipping):
For those who reside in countries not listed above can still purchase from this store but you would either need a proxy service or a forwarding service. The Hololive Production Official Store is probably the faster option to get your goods to you sooner (even if you are using a proxy/forwarding service).
Geek Jack – Is a Vtuber Merch Online store that is established for oversea fans. Their site is available in English and Chinese. Their only shipping courier is EMS, which means residents that reside in countries that have EMS shipments from Japan blocked will have their goods waiting in the warehouse until EMS shipment gets the OK. As an Australian that has been suffering with this EMS ban from Japan Post for almost 2~3 years, I have a lot of merch that is unfulfilled at the moment lmao. Geek Jack says it will try other options to get things shipped but yeah, probably the slowest option.
