[Monthly Overview] March 2019 Overview

PS Vita

Kenka Banchou Otome 2nd Rumble!! – 14th March – Spike Chunsoft

Nintendo Switch

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 6 DX – 14th March – Neoromance

Diabolik Lovers Chaos Lineage – 28th March – Otomate / Rejet

This month comes with a couple of sad news. March means that the production of the PS Vita has ended permanently in Japan. March also marks the (probably) second last otome game (Kenka Banchou Otome 2nd Rumble) to release on the PS Vita, with Variable Barricade being the last to release next month in April–unless some company surprises us with a PS Vita release in the latter half of the year.

Meanwhile most otome games will possibly be moving to the Nintendo Switch. We’re nearing an end of an era with otome games on the PS Vita and heading towards an unknown future of visual novels made for the female demographic. As of late, I’ve noticed that a lot of online sites that usually keep track of when otome and BL games release have started to slow down on updating… in fact some haven’t even updated since last year. So you best believe its getting a bit troublesome for me to get some info on release dates these days, unless I start purchasing magazines dedicated to otome/BL games again. Its a bit troubling to see this type of decline of interest as well as releases.

Big commercial BL titles have slowed down to a trickle and right now the otome game market is being monopolised by one company–Otomate–which is where most of the otome games come from now as other otoge specialised companies go bankrupt (QuinRose, Honeybee’s parent company [though honeybee and other branches have been acquired by another comapny]) or have slowed down production to almost hardly making console games like Rejet and Karin Entertainment. These can be a bit worrying in terms of how the market is developing in this environment.

Only time will tell.

Anyway, enough of that. Here’s a run down summary of the games that will release this month.

Kenka Banchou Otome 2nd Rumble!! is a PS Vita game. It is the 3rd game in the Kenka Banchou Otome series and is a sequel rather than a fandisc taking place when Hinako is in her second year of high school which means there will be fresh new faces coming in as first years, one of them being Tenma Sagara who will try to challenge our heroine of her top position at the school. I have no idea if relationships from the first game and fandisc will continue in this sequel but Tenma will be a new ‘captureable’ character, though sadly Rintaro’s step-brother still ain’t captureable despite being a first year also which is a shame. There will be a new battle system that plays more like an old school side scrolling beat ’em up… but with chibi characters lol. So close to getting 3D battles like in the original Kenka Banchou series.

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 6 DX is a port to the Nintendo Switch. It is a 2-in-1 game where it includes the original game and its sequel Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 6 Gentou Rondo. If you’d like the game summary for the original game check out it’s VNDB page.

Diabolik Lovers Chaos Lineage is a Nintendo Switch game and possibly the first Diabolik Lovers game to be on the Nintendo Switch. This game is based on the Chaos Lineage Drama CD series and hooo boy, this one is a bit messy. I tried to read the story summary on the website and it says something about that all the boys have lost their memories or something and that instead of the Sakamaki, Mukami and Tsukinami family we get 3 new families made up of a mixture of the original three families plus that new dude from Lost Eden and they all think they’re brothers when in the original some of them aren’t even related. So basically this whole game is a huge retcon of all previous 6 games. Enjoy!

And that is all. I plan on getting Kenka Banchou Otome 2nd Rumble but not at this moment. I’ve been planning on going to a trip to Japan somewhere in June or something so I’m thinking of just holding off buying anything until then so I can just bring a huge haul of otome games from Japan back home lol. I’d like to purchase some second-hand otoges but we’ll have to see how my wallet handles this 😆

Thanks for reading!

  1. I’m not sure if to be grateful or not to Otomate for keeping the commercial market afloat with most of the new releases at the moment, heh. I hope you have fun planning out for your trip! Being able to pick out things in person is a great feeling (without the worry of all the shipping fees online). I feel like I lost my mind when first stepping into a second-hand store.

    1. I feel like I might go in a frenzy of buying second hand Otome games and then waking up from a shopping coma surrounded by bought games and an empty wallet lol.
I just hope Otomate can step up their game with making good otoge bc lately there’s some that are a hit or a miss. There’s other visual novels out there that go over and beyond when it comes to visual story telling with animated backgrounds and sprites and honestly I’d love to see Otome games get the same treatment.

      1. THAT WAS ME WITH ART BOOKS WHEN I CAME BACK FROM JAPAN. It’s nuts how much stuff can get discounted just because someone else before you owned it even if it looks like it was completely untouched.

WRITING IS AS IMPORTANT AS ART, OTOMATE. I think I’ve only really seen animated backgrounds in Geten no Hana…hopefully there’ll be other companies stepping up to try new things with the genre.

  2. I feel really bad for PS Vita, partially because I’ve only bought it in autumn 2017. There’s a huge amount of games to play, but time… and money…

I hope the whole Switch transition will be successful for otome genre, as I can’t stand mobage. Although, carrying my Switch (a.k.a. gaming plank) around isn’t what I consider portability; that thing is huge!

I will be getting DL Chaos Lineage this month. The writing of many routes is subpar at best with this series and creators do their best to milk it to death, but there’s so many seiyuu I love in it! The Limited edition I’m getting better be worth it.

    1. It seems Nintendo (at least the Japanese side) cares about the Otome genre as they made a little feature page on their website listing all the Otome games available on the eShop. Something sony didn’t care about despite visual novels bring one of the only genres keeping their PS Vita alive.
But yeah I hope in the future Nintendo improves the model of the switch to be a bit lighter and less bulky.

I’m thinking of getting DL Chaos Lineage too but for a different reason. Mostly bc I’m a sucker for badly written plots that I wanna see where this “all 13 guys have amnesia” premise goes. I hope it’ll be hilarious lol. Though I’ll wait for when its on sale or get a second hand game.

  3. Bruh, I might actually get Dialovers Chaos Lineage just to see how messy it gets lolol
I hate the route the series took after the first game and how its wrung dry of any decent writing but i have a soft spot for these sadistic bastards hahaha

    1. They’ll prolly keep milking it until the end of time bc there’s still an efficient amount of ppl buying into the series. It’s a well that will never run dry lol
Can’t wait for more shitpost-like games in the future.
